Superior Functionality

North Idaho Pavers was contracted to transform a residential backyard landscape and pool area. The primary goals of the project were to address persistent puddling and cracking in the previously installed concrete and enhance the overall aesthetics of the backyard.

The Solution: Permeable Pavers

To tackle these issues, we installed permeable pavers around the pool. These pavers provide an innovative solution that not only resolves the functional challenges of water management but also significantly improves the space’s visual appeal.

What Are Permeable Pavers?

Permeable pavers are specialized paving materials that allow water to pass through the surface, infiltrating the ground below. They are constructed with small gaps or porous materials that promote natural drainage, reducing water runoff and preventing puddling.

Aesthetic and Functional Benefits

In addition to addressing puddling and cracking, the permeable pavers transformed the backyard into an elegant and inviting space. The homeowners now enjoy a functional pool area that enhances the property’s value and visual appeal.

Base Layer Installation

A sub-base made of compacted aggregate (such as crushed rock or gravel) is installed. This layer ensures proper drainage and provides a stable foundation for the turf. The base is compacted using a vibrating plate compactor to create a smooth, solid surface.

Geotextile Fabric Installation (Optional)

A weed barrier or geotextile fabric is often placed over the base to prevent weeds from growing through the synthetic turf.

Turf Installation

Synthetic turf rolls are laid out and positioned on the prepared surface. The turf is cut to fit the area precisely, ensuring it covers the entire space without gaps or overlaps. Seams are joined together using special adhesive or seam tape.

Infill Application

Once the turf is secured, infill materials (such as sand, rubber, or silica) are spread over the turf to help the blades stand upright and provide cushioning. This also aids in drainage and maintains the turf’s natural appearance.

Final Grooming and Inspection

The synthetic turf is brushed and leveled to ensure that the fibers are upright and evenly distributed. A final inspection is done to check for proper installation and that all seams and edges are securely anchored.

Resolving Concrete Cracking

Cracking in concrete around pools is a common issue caused by several factors:

Temperature Fluctuations

Concrete expands and contracts with temperature changes, leading to stress and eventual cracking.

Poor Installation

Insufficient preparation or improper curing can weaken the concrete’s structural integrity.

Water Damage

Poolside environments expose concrete to constant moisture, which can infiltrate small cracks, freeze, and expand, worsening the damage.

Addressing Puddling Issues

Puddling on concrete surfaces occurs due to improper drainage and the impermeable nature of concrete, which prevents water from seeping into the ground. Over time, water accumulates on the surface, creating unsightly and slippery puddles. Using permeable pavers, rainwater, and pool splashes are absorbed and directed into the subsoil, eliminating surface water accumulation and improving overall safety.

Conclusion

North Idaho Pavers’ installation of permeable pavers successfully solved the challenges posed by the previous concrete surface. By leveraging the benefits of this innovative material, we improved drainage, eliminated puddling, and prevented future cracking, all while creating a beautiful and low-maintenance outdoor area. This project highlights the superior functionality and aesthetic appeal of permeable pavers compared to traditional concrete solutions.
